Umbilical cord blood-derived stem cells for treatment of basilar artery thrombosis 2012-01-16

Korean scientist have reported the first case of basilar artery dissection treated with mesenchymal stem cells from umbilical cord. Basilar artery thrombosis is a rare occurrence, and is significantly associated with morbidity and mortality. The symptoms of basilar artery dissection include head and neck pain and intermittent or permanent stroke symptoms such as difficulty speaking, impaired coordination and visual loss.

 

A 17-year-old Korean man was diagnosed with basilar artery dissection. He has all the basic symptoms, so scientist desided to treet him wit UCB. The first injection of UCB he received after a month of first symptoms. National Institutes of Health (NIH) stroke scale was used for the comparison of patience condition before and after first injection of umbilical cord blood (UCB)-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSC). After 60days theboy'scondition improvedwithin 15points (from 35 to 20).
