Fighting baldness with umbilical cord stem cells 2012-05-18

Baldness is a common condition characterized by partial or complete loss or thinning of hair on the scalp due to hair falling out. At present, there is still no method known that is capable of completely reversing and essentially curing this condition. No two so called specialist hair clinics appear to agree on what actually couse hair loss. The general reasons for hair loss is as fallows: heredity factors, ageing, hormonal imbalance, toxic substances or severe radiation. And no so long time ago scientisthave found, that stems cells can helps in these situations. Scientist have found that stem cells do not develop properly in balding scalps compare with hairy ones.  

 

In 2003, umbilical cord blood became applicable to treat baldness. Researchers developed technology using umbilical cord blood mesenchymal cells. They showed that several weeks after transplantation, patience noticed, that hair started to grow back. Mesenchymal cells were transplanted directly into the bald areas.

 

Scientist believe that transplanting umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells into a bald area will make great contributions to treatment for baldness taking into consideration the fact that there is no alternative method for curing baldness.
